Petition against water, electricity, sanitation and refuse removal tariff increase in eThekwini

Say NO to tariff increases in eThekwini
eThekwini residents are being asked to pay more for water, electricity, sanitation and refuse removal, while service delivery continues to fail.
The municipality has proposed increases of:
- Electricity: 10.5%
- Water:
- Domestic: 15%
- Non-domestic: 16%
- Sewage:
- Domestic: 13%
- Non-domestic: 14%
- Refuse Removal (DSW): 13%
Additional Charges:
- Revenue Management Deposits: 5% increase
(Refundable deposits when applying for water and electricity services)
- Mandatory Water Loss Charge has also been proposed
This comes as the City faces an ongoing water crisis, recurrent power outages, and a billing system that remains broken, with residents still subjected to inaccurate estimated bills.
Residents are paying more each year yet receiving less in return.
What are we paying for if basic services are unreliable or unavailable?
Instead of fixing infrastructure, resolving billing failures, and restoring service delivery, the municipality continues to shift the financial burden onto residents.
This is not sustainable. It is not fair. And it cannot continue.
We call on the eThekwini Municipality to:
- Halt the proposed tariff increases
- Fix the billing crisis and end inaccurate estimated billing
- Prioritise investment in infrastructure and service delivery
- Ensure residents only pay for services they actually receive
Residents should not be forced to fund inefficiency and mismanagement.
