Petition to fix the Tongaat & Verulam Water Crisis Now

The DA in eThekwini is petitioning for urgent intervention to resolve the ongoing water crisis affecting Tongaat and Verulam.

For years, residents and businesses in these areas have faced unreliable water supply, frequent outages, and growing uncertainty about when permanent solutions will be delivered. Despite long-standing commitments by the eThekwini Municipality, critical water infrastructure projects have stalled, leaving communities without answers and without accountability.

Reason for petition:

  • Funding that was originally approved for key water infrastructure projects — including the Tongaat Water Treatment Works functional upgrade and the Waterloo–Katzkop project — has been reduced or withdrawn without proper explanation.
  • Contracts linked to these projects have been cancelled or delayed, resulting in no meaningful progress on the ground.
  • Residents continue to rely on water tankers, which are unreliable, costly, and not a sustainable solution.
  • The municipality has failed to clearly communicate the reasons for these delays or provide a realistic, enforceable timeline for delivery.
  • Ongoing mismanagement of water infrastructure places households, schools, clinics, and local businesses at risk.

Access to clean, reliable water is a basic service that the municipality is legally and morally obligated to provide. The continued failure to do so represents a breakdown in governance and planning that cannot be ignored.

We therefore demand the following:

  • The immediate reinstatement of the full budgets originally allocated to the Tongaat WTW functional upgrade and the Waterloo–Katzkop water supply project.
  • A public meeting, convened and attended by the Mayor and the City Manager, to properly explain the withdrawal of funding, account to the community, and outline corrective action.
  • A binding delivery timetable for water infrastructure in Tongaat and Verulam, with clear milestones and independent oversight to ensure contracts are not cancelled and construction proceeds without further delay.

By signing this petition, residents are demanding accountability, transparency, and action.
