Why This Matters:
- Massive increases: Since 2007, Eskom has raised prices by 450%.
- “Make-Up” tariff: As demand for Eskom electricity decreases (because users go off-the-grid, or seek alternative suppliers), Eskom can charge a “make-up” tariff to cover lost revenue from the previous year, creating a vicious cycle of increases.
- Economic impact: This will add unbearable financial strain on households already struggling with soaring living costs.
The DA approach so far:
- Parliamentary action: We’ve secured an urgent debate in Parliament to address this crisis, making it clear that Eskom cannot continue to pass its inefficiencies onto the public.
- Local Government resistance: DA Governments at local levels are taking this fight up with NERSA too, because they are committed to fighting against enormous billing increases on behalf of their residents. Even if they must implement the new tarrif, they are prepared to fight back.
