Stand with the DA – Stop Eskom’s 40% Tariff Increase
Eskom wants to hike your electricity bill by 40% in the middle of a cost of living crisis.
NERSA has published Eskom’s application to increase the cost of electricity by an additional 36.15% for the coming year. This hike will force millions to make an impossible choice between food and electricity. We refuse to accept a future where electricity is unaffordable for the average household.
Adding insult to injury, Eskom has been given a green light to overcharge you next year, to recover revenue shortfalls from this year. NERSA has already approved a 4% increase to enable Eskom to collect an extra R8 billion from consumers to make up for revenue losses.
This takes the total proposed hike to over 40%, if Eskom’s application for the additional increase over-and-above the 4% make-up tariff is approved.
But there is hope!
The DA is undertaking an all-out assault on Eskom’s upcoming tariff hikes, and against the way electricity hikes are set, going forward.
Why This Matters:
- Massive increases: Since 2007, Eskom has raised prices by over 650%.
- “Make-Up” tariff: As demand for Eskom electricity decreases (because users go off-the-grid, or seek alternative suppliers), Eskom can charge a “make-up” tariff to cover lost revenue from the previous year, creating a vicious cycle of increases.
- Economic impact: This will add unbearable financial strain on households already struggling with soaring living costs.
The DA approach so far:
- National Day of Action: The DA took to the streets across all nine provinces to fight back against this crippling hike
- Parliamentary action: We held an urgent debate in Parliament to address this crisis, making it clear that Eskom cannot continue to pass its inefficiencies onto the public.
- Local Government resistance: DA Governments at local levels are taking this fight up with NERSA too, because they are committed to fighting against enormous billing increases on behalf of their residents. Even if they must implement the new tariff, they are prepared to fight back.
- Handed over 200,000 signatures to NERSA: ahead of the start of their public hearings. Calling on NERSA to reject Eskom’s proposal on behalf of all South Africans.
