Every day, thousands of residents in Ugu South risk their lives traveling on unsafe and neglected roads. In Ugu South, roads have become increasingly dangerous for pedestrians, schoolchildren, workers, and motorists. Narrow lanes, overgrown verges, and a lack of proper sidewalks force people to walk on the road, often in poor lighting conditions and alongside speeding vehicles and heavy trucks.
The Department of Transport has a constitutional mandate to ensure safe, accessible infrastructure for all. Yet, too often, communities are left behind while lives are put at risk.
That is why the DA is calling on the MEC for Transport in KwaZulu-Natal to:
- Review all provincial roads in Ugu South and then to implement a plan of action to resurface or rehabilitate those roads found to be in a condition which warrants action
- Review current projects in Ugu South, the expenditure and the non-payment of contractors linked to these contractors
- Review the timeline of the Umzimkhulu Bridge and apply toll concessions if necessary
