Objection against proposed name change of Kirkwood to Nqweba

Sign the DA's petition now to object against the proposed name change of Kirkwood to Nqweba. National government continues to waste money while so many South Africans suffer in poverty. There is no historically relevant reason to change this town's name. Protect Kirkwood from a completely unnecessary and expensive name change.

Sign this petition and show your support for the DA’s mission to protect Kirkwood from this unnecessary and expensive name change.

I hereby object against the proposed name change of Kirkwood to Nqweba based on the following:

History: While redress is crucial, the name Nqweba has very little historical meaning, and the name Kirkwood has no negative connotations. The town was not established through a war or any displacement of local people.

Economical reasons: At a time when unemployment is sky-high, the name change will be an expensive exercise and will cause great uncertainty in global markets. The name Kirkwood is synonymous with citrus exports, which are the number one creator of employment in the area.

Tourism: Kirkwood has created a well-known brand in the tourism industry, which is greatly boosted by well-known events such as the yearly Kirkwood Wildlife Festival, which in turn gives a huge boost to the Sundays River Valley GDP. Kirkwood is also the host of many bed and breakfasts, game farms and camping sites which national and international tourists frequent.

Support the DA’s mission and sign this petition. National government continues to waste money to score cheap political points while so many South Africans suffer in poverty.

The petition will be submitted to the Name Change Committee and the parliamentary petitions committee.
