DAWN in Mpumalanga is calling for the appointment of a child commissioner in the Province

South Africa has committed to respecting children’s rights, including their right to life, under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, and the Constitution.

Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (DAWN) in Mpumalanga is fighting for the appointment of a CHILD COMMISSIONER within the Province.

Our province is plagued by heinous acts of violence against children.

The office of the Child Commissioner must be independent.  The commissioner must be empowered to investigate children’s rights, and while investigating accompany the police on their investigations. Subpoena witnesses and request them to produce evidence, as well as administer an oath or affirmation to witnesses.

The child commissioner in Mpumalanga must be mandated to protect and promote the best interest of children when it comes to

• Health services
• Education
• Welfare services
• Recreation and amenities
• Sport

Children are our future and need to be protected!
