Fix the R59: Grow the Economy and Save Lives

The R59 has become a deadly, collapsing transport corridor. From Dealesville, Free State, to Johannesburg, motorists face potholes, no lighting, fading road markings and dangerous intersections. Weekly accidents at the Sasolburg entrances prove that this road is putting lives at risk.

The R59 is also a key economic artery: It links the Free State, North West, Northern Cape and Gauteng. It carries traffic between agricultural towns producing 66.8% of SA’s maize. It supports tourism to areas like Parys and Vredefort

Yet the road is now so degraded that farmers, businesses, and travellers are forced to avoid it, costing jobs and economic opportunities in provinces already suffering some of South Africa’s highest unemployment.

We call on government to act now:

* Transfer the R59 to SANRAL for proper rehabilitation and maintenance.

* Start emergency repairs immediately, potholes, markings and lighting ahead of the festive time.

* Make town entrances safer by allowing municipalities to install speed bumps, signage and lighting.

* Protect farmers and rural economies by ensuring inter-ministerial cooperation between Transport, CoGTA and Agriculture.

The R59 should be a lifeline, not a death trap.
